National History Day

Published by Chloe at 8:40 pm under Uncategorized

Last week, Sam was one of three students selected from our local home-school group as a winner of the local National History Day competition. He and his paper will be going to the Regional competition on March 12th. He’s in the final stages of cleaning up the paper for the competition and is getting excited. This year’s topic was “Innovations in History”. Go Sam!!

    Way to go Sam!

History day was always one of our favorite school projects. Both Carrie and Kevin participated, and although it was a tremendous amount of work over many months, the results were certainly labors of love. The first year Carrie entered she also did a paper. The following year she entered a performance. One year I was lucky enough to travel with Kevin to Washington DC for the National Competition - his project was audio-visual - what a wonderful experience! Each time one of them entered, it became a family project. We all learned something in the process! As I recall, Carrie’s paper was her first experience with an annotated bibliography…

I’d love to know your paper’s subject. If you have a moment between edits, please let me know! Good luck in the regional competition. I hope you do well - I’m rooting for you!!!

    Love,
    Gr-Aunt Sally :-)

    Hey there ….

Sam was at the SC State GeogBee (sponsored by National Geographic, Google & Plum Creek) this past Friday. He came in 11th. Not too bad. We didn’t do any special extra work, just continued with the usual grind. So many of the kids there seemed to have so much pressure on them to win, win, win…. When Sam came out he was obviously drained, but he said, “I had no idea I knew that much about geography. I might want to do this again next year.” So much better than some of the other responses we witnessed.

The History Day topic this year was “Innovations in History” and Sam wrote a paper on MS-DOS. He titled the paper “MS-DOS: Secret Agent of Change”. He won the Regional for Junior Paper. Mom and Dad are coming at the end of next week so that I can take him to the state competition while Mark is in Haiti. Should be exciting.

I had no idea Kevin and Carrie did this too. I don’t think I ever knew it was an option. Of course, maybe it wasn’t at the time. I am looking into Odyssey of the Mind for next year, but not sure about that yet. We’ll keep you posted on the progress.

    Love,
    Clo :-)
